Week 15 Blog

As many of us have heard, there currently is a story out about of the students of IU that has been arrested in Egypt. The egyptian government has accused 21 year old Luke Gates of throwing fire bombs at Police during a protest against the Egyptian Government.  The country is currently controlled by a military leader and the people of the country only want him to step down.  Luke was held there for a few days before being released Thursday, November 24.  There was an investigation about whether he was involved with the demonstrations in Egypt.  IU has told its students to not get involved at all while they are studying down there.  Sadly, many people have discovered several of his tweets to reveal his participation in the riots to be true.  He has mentioned in one of the tweets this: "I never wanted to come here if i didnt know it was going to be ok, [and] honestly, hopefully i die here."

After reading what the student said about the riots in Egypt, I am shocked by how he chose to completely disobey the rules IU set about this situation and do that.  Although, I can see a reason for why he chose to act out in this manner since the country has been under a dictatorship.  He is merely trying to show that he supports the protesters and their desires to remove the military's power in the country.  However, I believe that what he did there was foolish and stupid.  Since he is visiting a country, he does not technically have the rights that those people have who actually live their lives in Egypt.

  1. I agree with you Chris. He can express his feelings in another way, he shouldn't join the riots. Now many of us know what will happen when you join a riot such as this one. IU should maybe have a talk with him and do something about this. If he wants to do something like that, he should at least know the laws and the rights he has in Egypt or any other country.
